The whisky is bottled in 100cl at cask strength, 52%abv. It is named after the last remaining drifter boat in Wick Harbour in the North of Scotland, the Isabella Fortuna, registered as WK499.
Wick is home to the Pulteney distillery, the most northerly distillery on the UK mainland, and was the largest fishing port in Europe in the 19th century. The exclusive release of 18,000 bottles is from casks selected by Stuart Harvey, Master Blender at Inver House Distillers Ltd. Speaking about the launch, Old Pulteney’s Senior Brand Manager, Iain Baxter commented: “We are delighted to be offering this exclusive limited edition to travel retail. The history of the Pulteney Distillery is entwined with the history of the Wick fishing industry, that’s why Old Pulteney is known as ‘The Genuine Maritime Malt’. Both our bottles and tube feature a traditional herring drifter and so it’s only fitting that we acknowledge the last remaining drifter in the harbour with this limited edition Isabella Fortuna WK499.”

Colour: Bright and light gold in colour.
Nose: The nose is light brown sugar and sweet coconut, with rich creamy toffee balanced by green apples, lemon and mandarin notes.
Taste: The taste is sweet, soft and delicately complex with chewy vanilla and warm spices.
Finish: A lingering warm finish.

David Stirk's Exclusive Malts

De nieuwe bottelingen zijn de eersten die David geheel eigenhandig heeft gebotteld op zijn eigen bottellijn. Ik kan u verzekeren dat het wat bloed, zweet en tranen heeft gekost, maar de whisky’s zijn alle moeite meer dan waard. Ten eerste is er de Auchroisk 1996, een zeldzame botteling van een ongewone distilleerderij. De neus kent karamel en zoet eikenhout met vanille. Likeur achtig op de tong met veel fruit en kruiden. De afdronk is lang en kruidig, voor bij het desert. De Glen Moray uit 2001 is een heerlijk snoepje gevuld met room. Een sterke finish met veel smaak is redelijk ongewoon (en veel lekkerder) voor een Glen Moray. De Glen Elgin uit 1995, Mortlach uit 1995 en Glen Garioch uit 1993 zijn allen gerijpt op sherryvaten. Een prachtig rijtje, waarbij de Mortlach een gebakje met room en fruit is, met een fantastische afdronk, de Glen Garioch wat zoeter is, met mintsmaak en zwaarder in de sherry tonen zit met een heel ouderwets vleugje turf er over heen (mijn persoonlijke favoriet), en de Glen Elgin het zwaarst in de sherrytonen zit. Rijk fruit, drogend eikenhout en rozijnen in siroop. Een lange, hete afdronk geeft zeer veel voldoening. Als laatste is er de Macduff uit 1973. Passiefruit, perziken en bananen overheersen in de neus. Zoete vanille en crème brulée in de afdronk. Een heerlijke gedistingeerde whisky.

Bruichladdich Octomore Comus

Character: Medium weight and well defined for a young Islander. The texture is rich, sweet and mellow and the viscosity of the Sauternes brings balance to the power of the peat. A most sophisticated Octomore - it’s kind of unbelievable to see “The Beast” tamed a little!
Color: Golden Honey/Ripe Barley
Nose: The opening is a beautiful combination of peat smoke, bracken, leather, tobacco pouches, bog myrtle & briny waves. Then, little twists of mint toffee enter the system as do the nutty oak notes – both French and American. And so the dance goes on, but where is the French beauty? She waits patiently on the fringes then, at exactly the right moment, she makes her entrance from the epicentre of the spirit, bringing aromatics and flavour the young Ileach can only dream of. From deep in her soul she commits to this amazing relationship, the aromatics relay the message to the waiting taste buds to expect a whole new experience: the raisiny botrytis of the Premier Cru Superieur Sauternes. Its flavours - pear syrup, apricot, candied fruit, guava, passion and citrus fruits leached from the wood. You have to wonder just how surreal this is - a massively peated beast being seduced by a delectably sweet, French beauty – passion changes everything.
Palate: It’s supernatural. The taster is taken on an incredible journey of discovery, the coming together of flavours so far removed from each other you would think it would be a disaster. The kaleidoscope of aromatics transcends beautifully onto the palate which is going crazy with excitement: a new sensory solar system.
Finish: This love affair should never have happened. This is Bruichladdich walking on the wild side, bringing pleasure and excitement to those who have that sense of adventure and passion. The finish may not last for an eternity - but the experience will.
