Based on the limited number of bottles and the link with The Whiskyman, we can probably assume this Laphroaig 1990 is from a shared cask. Jack, the friendly chief of Whiskysite.nl kindly provided a sample. Laphroaig 21yo 1990 (48,4%, Whiskysite.nl 2011, selected by The Whiskyman, bourbon hogshead, 60 btl.)

Nose: quite aromatic. It’s definitely peaty and smoky (hints of bacon) but there’s a nice layer of banana, gooseberries and vanilla to make it a little rounder. Similar to the Laphroaig 1990 by Malts of Scotland in that respect. Nice lemon candy. Some seaweed in the background. Balanced nose. Mouth: sweet and citrusy. More emphasis on the smoke now (smoked fish). Hints of liquorice and antiseptic. Some briny notes as well. Again good fun. Finish: very long, smoky, citrusy.

It’s complex and certainly up there with the other great Laphroaig 1990 we’ve seen in the past few months. Around € 120. They also have a sample for you to try. Score: 89/100

This is a valedictory farewell to the Vatted Malt, one delivered with honour and pride. At midnight on November 22nd, 2011, an era ends. After that point, it will be illegal for whiskymakers to use the term Vatted Malt to label a Scotch whisky made from the combination of two or more single malts. From 23rd November 2011, this style of whisky will by law have to be labelled as a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. To mark the occasion, Compass Box have created a limited edition bottling, The Last Vatted Malt, made from a marriage of fine, old single malt whiskies from Islay and Speyside distilleries.

Flavour Descriptors
With intense aromas and flavours of dried fruits and maltiness underscored by a subtle sweet smokiness, all robed in the revealing signs of whiskies of antiquity.

Distillery Sourcing
Single malt Scotch whiskies from distilleries located in the village of Aberlour in Speyside and in the village of Port Askaig on Islay.
Wood
22% first-fill Sherry Butt, 78% American Oak Hogsheads.

Bottled at 53.7%. Not chill filtered. Natural colour.

Deep aromas and flavours of vanilla pastry cream, toffee and lightly toasted nuts, with a subtle and elegant complexity.

Invergordon (31%, distilled in 1965), Carsebridge (14%, distilled in 1979), Port Dundas (20%, distilled in 1991) and Cameronbridge (35%, distilled in 1997).
