Kleur: oud goud / oker Neus: rozijnen, christmas-cake, citrus (pink grapefruit), zoet en fris, specerijen, later maggi. Smaak: zacht begin, zoethout, specerijen, iets zoets verder pittig, hout. Afdronk: zeer lange afdronk, complex.

Kleur: Geel, bruinig, rosé. Neus: Vriendelijk, zacht zalvend. Tabak, romig vanille, beetje frisheid van de wijn maar zeker niet overheersend. Smaak: De smaak begint dan ook zacht, dan licht ziltig echt whisky! Ook weer hout, vanille, romig. Afdronk: Lange maar rustige afdronk, aan het einde iets ziltig en salmiak. Geen fout te vinden, mooi zuiver.

Kleur: Amber, bruinig. Neus: In de geur snoepgoed, bazooka kauwgom. Cream sherry, PX. Smaak: Begint zacht, vervolgens meer bite. Veel meer inhoud dan je verwacht na de vriendelijke geur. Complex. Afdronk: In de afdronk weer de Bazooka kauwgom, ziltig en hout. Commentaar: Een fijne whisky, met meer dan voldoende inhoud.

Bananen! Gebakken bananen. Geflambeerde bananen... zalig gewoon! Niet dat ie nogal ééntonig is, verre van, maar die warme bananen is toch wel het eerste dat opvalt in deze neus. Vijgen, ja ook dat valt op. Maar ook andere soorten fruit laten zich gelden: pruimen, gele rozijnen, aardbeienconfituur. Naast dit (zoete) fruit heb ik honing, antiekwas en (oud) leder. Daarna gember (gekonfijte gember) en zoethout. Dennenhars. Melkchocolade. Subtiele sherrytonen. Eik? Ja, maar heel wat minder dan je zou verwachten op deze leeftijd. Getemde eik. Het zoete en het fruitige halen het op de neus van het bittere, met meerdere fietslengtes. Op de smaak meer eik, zoals wel vaker, maar het wordt nooit drogend. Integendeel, het zoete en vooral het fruit blijven de forcing voeren. De bananen en de vijgen zetten zich door en worden vergezeld van sinaas, sappige peren en zelfs wat mango. Qua zoets heb ik honing en rozijnen. Kaneel, zoethout en nootmuskaat qua kruiden. Tabak noteerde ik nog, net als toast. Meer 'sherry' dan op de neus. En een perfect, romig mondgevoel. Lange afdronk op vijgen, zoethout, honing en zachte eik. Het blijft dus tot op het einde zacht en elegant. En dat is de sterkte van deze whisky: 43 jaar oud en nog zo levendig, fris en vol aroma's. 93/100

This is a valedictory farewell to the Vatted Malt, one delivered with honour and pride. At midnight on November 22nd, 2011, an era ends. After that point, it will be illegal for whiskymakers to use the term Vatted Malt to label a Scotch whisky made from the combination of two or more single malts. From 23rd November 2011, this style of whisky will by law have to be labelled as a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. To mark the occasion, Compass Box have created a limited edition bottling, The Last Vatted Malt, made from a marriage of fine, old single malt whiskies from Islay and Speyside distilleries.

The eleventh in our series of "Annual Single Cask Bottlings" is from Bunnahabhain distillery on Islay. After nosing and tasting several cask samples from many distilleries, we eventually selected this cask, owned by Wemyss Vintage Malts. Cask Number 1798 was distilled at Bunnahabhain distillery on Friday 2nd March 1979. It was bottled on Tuesday 20th September 2011 at it’s natural cask strength of 51.4% alc/vol. From a sherry butt, the angels agreed to let us have 511 bottles (700ml). Maggie Riegler of the Greenhall Gallery, here in Craigellachie, was once again (for the 11th consecutive year) commissioned to paint a picture specifically for the front label which depicts a different view of the Highlander Inn to that of pervious years.
