A'bunadh is derived from the Gaelic and means "return to origin". The whiskey is produced according to the methods which were common around 1879. A'bunadh is bottled at cask strength, cold filter is not applied. This A'bunadh is a whiskey in the purest form. Maturation takes place only on selected ex-sherry casks and -as usual at that time missing the year specified on the label.
Color: Dark warm amber.
Nose: Herbs, chocolates and orange, combined with rich, full tones of Oloroso sherry.
Taste: Orange, dark sherry, dried fruit and ginger mixed with dark chocolate, enhanced with the powerful full-bodied flavors of Oloroso sherry.
Finish: Powerful, intense with bittersweet notes of dark chocolate, exotic spices and oak.
Spices like nutmeg and curry, but not really in-your-face actually. Rather shy. Rhubarb. I find myself searching for the red fruits and fudge, but they aren't there. When adding water, quite some orange comes up, as well as a little raspberry.
Very peppery. Now also some cranberry and caramel. Sweet & sour sauce. And just like in the previous batch, the alcohol is quite prominent. Water adds orange to the taste as well, but it quickly falls apart.
Pepper, goji berry, orange and mocha..
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad whisky at all. But after some of the great batches that have been released in the past, I found batch 50 already a bit disappointing and this one is even less impressive. Probably the least interesting batch I've had so far (out of 15 batches), I'd suggest to get another one.
