The Balvenie Port Wood has 21 years matured in traditional oak barrels. For the last period of maturation, the malt then crossed 30 years old Port barrels, entailing the finest vintage port issued wines. The result is a malt whiskey unique character and undeniably Balvenie. The aroma is rich, fruity with a hint of port.
Color: deep, reddish glow
Smell: rich, fruity with a hint of port
Taste: exceptional character port
Bearing: 21 journalled in the traditional barrels, then a 30-year-old Port-containers for a period of 4 to 6 months.
Vanilla, grapes, barley sugar, honey and syrup.
Juicy red plums, red berries, the port is obvious. Slightly oaky (but not as much as I would expect from a 21 yo) with vanilla on the side.
The contribution from the port cask is there but disappears rather quick and the finish is left with a rather short honey sweet flavor before its all gone.
Good port wood, but I expect a lot of refill bourbon in this one. With a solid craft presentation (NC2 and at least 46% ABV), this would be an excellent dram.
