Description: Created by the 9th generation of the family. In 2005 they planted a new vineyard together around the winery. The vineyard, at an altitude of 690m, is planted with an indigenous Tempranillo variety. Densely planted, this means that the vines have to work hard for their nutrition and only produce small clusters of top quality grapes. Made from hand picked grapes. After selection of the grapes, a fermentation in small tanks takes place for 7 days and a maceration with the skins for 17 days for extra extraction of color and flavour. Malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels of 225 liters (50%) and French oak “boson” barrels (500 liters) (50%). Aging of 14 months in new French oak and a minimum of 10 months in the bottle. Limited edition of 8,213 75cl bottles and 455 magnum 150cl bottles.
Gastronomy: Serve at 16-18°C. Full, firm and round with notes of ripe berries, chocolate and spiciness of the oak. Intense and long finish.
Extra Information: The winery and vineyards are located in a unique environment under the Sierra de Cantabria. This mountain range is a natural barrier that stops the cold, damp winds of the Bay of Biscay and allows just the right amount of moisture to pass through for the proper development of the vines. It is also an area influenced by the Mediterranean climate, which provides the sun and heat necessary for the plant.
The vineyards are on calcareous clay soil and most face north to south with a pronounced slope along the Sierra de Cantabria to the River Ebro.
These properties create the optimal lighting and humidity conditions for the growth of the vines and the ripening of the grapes.
57 hectares of vineyards with an average age of 48 years. Special attention is paid to the work done by hand in the vineyards. Control of yields per hectare and respect for the environment are key factors in the quality of our wines.
The winery is run by the three children of Teodoro Unzalu and María Felisa Gaztelurrutia, Iker, Unax and Usuri. In 2006 the current winery opened in Laguardia, in the middle of their vineyards.
