In 1836, James and John Chivas left their home in the countryside to live in Aberdeen. James became an assistant in a supermarket selling delicacies, wine, spirits and other beverages. In 1841 James bought the business and started to focus on wines and spirits. James and John started bottling their own Scotch whiskey. In 1843 Chivas was officially appointed as purveyor to Her Majesty the Queen. James Chivas died in 1886. His son Alexander took over the business and continued to propagate the "Chivas Brothers philosophy"; namely the blending of the best matured whiskeys. In 1936 the company became a limited liability company, registered as Chivas Brothers Ltd. In 1950 Chivas Brothers started looking for a good supplier for fine malt whiskeys. Strathisla Distillery in Keith, the oldest and most beautiful distillery in the Scottish Highlands, turned out to be the most obvious choice. Today, Strathisla is still the home and heart of Chivas Regal.
James Chivas (1810-1886), the founder of the 200-year-old company Chivas Brothers, was one of the first to turn whiskey blending into a true art. For this he used the renowned malt whiskey from the Strathisla distillery. Since that time, Chivas Brothers has been committed to making the very best Scotch whiskey. And with success, witness the enormous popularity of Chivas Regal, the most important and most widely consumed deluxe whiskey in the world. The best malt and grain whiskeys are at the base, each of which has matured for at least 12 years in oak barrels. Characteristic is the high content of single malts. The result is a superlative whiskey, with the fullest and richest taste, easy to appreciate.
