As with the 17-years-old, the bearings in old bourbon barrels Old Pulteney be "married" with whiskey has aged in old sherry casks. The big difference is that the old sherry casks used here are made of American oak. This gives even more complexity, depth and character to this magnificent malt whiskey.
Colour: Gold amber with straw accents
Scent: Strong with fruity flavors (apples, pears) lightly fragrant with spicy notes and a hint of wood.
Taste: Sweet onset of light fruit, vanilla, honey and butterscotch
Finish: Long slightly dry finish
The nose is elegant, and starts on vanilla and oak. After a while grilled bananas join in with a whiff of smoke.
The taste is where this whisky really lifts off, starts briny and even bitter, but developes a firm sweetness. Toffee, caramel, even a little milk chocolate. Also orange peel and some wild herbs.
The finish is suddenly salty and drying, but also pleasantly sweet and lingering for a long, full minute.
This is a palette whisky!
Nose: Fruity with green apples and pears. Very very smooth with hints of spices, pure luxury for your senses.
Taste: Peaty and peppery but most of all sweet malt. After adding water, caramel starts to force it's way to the foreground.
Finish: Very lasting and very good. A bit on the dry side with a delicately spicy tones. Vanilla and fruity notes as well.
Balance: The balance of this whisky is charismatic, it keeps getting better in every step it takes. The finish is what I would call the main event of a entertaining show.
My full review:
Een heerlijk zilte maritieme whisky, wat lichte tonen van vanille en de zilte smaak van de zee komt duidelijk terug in deze whisky.
