Black Tot Last Consignment is a piece of liquid history. It was bottled from antique stoneware flasks containing the final stocks of Royal Navy Rum that remained untouched for more than four decades. After 239 years of tradition, the final rum ration was issued on board ships of the British Royal Navy on July 31, 1970 – a day forever known as Black Tot Day.
For many years thereafter, sealed in those antique stone flasks, the rum we now call Black Tot Last Consignment was used exclusively for state occasions and royal weddings. Remarkably, after all these years, Black Tot Last Consignment is still 54.3% (95° proof), almost exactly the original Navy strength. This is a historic blend that can never be replicated.
Nose
The initial syrup notes precede dark chocolate with super-ripe black fruit, muscovado sugar, and walnuts. A drop of water releases aromas of black banana, licorice root, and tamarind paste with an exotic edge of balsamic.
Palette
Starts thick and sweet with a burst of cassis, black coffee, and cocoa, leading to a finish of fragrant wood, forest fruits, and cigar tobacco. Truly dark and powerful, with a century of artisanal rum making in every drop.
Aftertaste
Very long with lightly scented wood, black fruit, and cigar tobacco.
Black Tot: The Last Consignment was first bottled in 2011 from antique stone jugs sourced from an English naval shipyard. It is the original rum used by the Royal Navy and contains rum up to 100 years old from former British colonies.
