Hinotori Single Malt is a resounding success, having made a strong start with a silver medal at the prestigious ISC Whisky Awards 2025, along with the Hinotori Blended, which also won a silver medal! This is double recognition for this reborn Japanese distillery, whose name means "phoenix," a symbol of resilience and rebirth.

Hinotori Single Malt is the result of meticulous Japanese craftsmanship, a blend of 70% unpeated and 30% peated malt (50 ppm), matured in new American oak barrels in a traditional earthen-walled shed, resulting in a refined, balanced and delicately smoky whisky.

The history of whisky distilling has been marked by highs and lows, but resilience and a passion for whisky have always been the driving force behind the distillery's rise.

In 1953 and 1959, two natural disasters put an end to whisky production. However, the founders and members of the Hekinan Distillery did not give up their dream of producing exceptional whisky. After the second disaster, the distillery was completely destroyed.

To celebrate their relaunch with Hinotori, the image of the phoenix was used, and thus, with the support of BBC Spirits, the distillery was able to resume whisky production in 2019, 70 years after its first distillation. Today, they are proud to produce their first single malt to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Nishioen Distillery. Every sip is a tribute to the distillery's eventful history, resilience, and passion for whisky.

The Hekinan Distillery is located in Nagoya, a city with a humid subtropical climate, with hot and humid summers reaching 38°C and cool winters with temperatures as low as -2°C. But it is the region's fertile soil that makes the spirits produced here so famous.

The Yahagi River, used to irrigate the crops, is a precious resource that significantly influences the quality of the distillery's products. The freshwater in this area is known as some of the finest in Japan, creating elegant aromas and flavors, and is used in the Hinotori Single Malt whisky.
