Nose:
Beautiful and delicate notes come to you when you bring your nose to the glass. I am reminded of dried apricots covered in a light dusting of icing sugar. It reminds me a bit of Turkish Delight (the candy, not the movie). Given that we are dealing with such an old dram, it is worth giving it some time in the glass, as the nose evolves from soft fruity notes to more floral notes such as lavender and lily of the valley. But the grain is still noticeable, with mild notes of grandma's porridge floating by. I can keep discovering new layers and notes on this nose, but what is most striking is that every element I find seems to be perfectly balanced and beautifully integrated into the dram. Wonderful!

Palette:
What I always love about whiskies is when they evolve. When the nose, palate and finish all surprise you and take you on a beautiful journey. This is such a dram. Where the nose was complex but delicate, the palate is complex and robust. The vanilla is immediately noticeable, but also the influence of the tannins over the years is noticeable. However, without these notes becoming overwhelming. There is pepper, liquorice root and anise. Paired with oatmeal, white wine and roasted chestnuts. Delicious!

Aftertaste:
The finish is long. And here I really notice that this is still a cask strength whisky. Time has reduced the alcohol percentage, but the fact that no water has been added explains the complexity and the extent to which the flavours linger in this dram. In turn, the finish is also very different from the nose and palate. There is candied apple with caramel, a hint of nutmeg and even some white chocolate covered Oreos. And I secretly really love those... This is a really delicious dram with a finish to savour!
