Each release of the Explorers Series is packed with innovation and bold thinking to create new unique Irish Whiskey styles. The Explorers series in particular embodies this philosophy of whiskey making within Teeling and celebrates the brave, intrepid Irish explorers who have traveled the world to make their mark. Each release of the Explorers Edition embraces the character and personality of a country by using unique casks or spirits that reflect the national identity. This 15 year old Japanese edition follows the Brazilian edition, which used unique Amburana Brazilian hardwood barrels, which unfortunately is only available exclusively in Travel Retail.

Shochu: Japan's hidden gem

Shochu is the hidden gem of Japanese spirits and is drunk more than Sake in its own country. Japanese Shochu is made from "Mugi", which is the Japanese word for barley. It is fermented using the traditional Koji fermentation process before being distilled in a pot still. It is then aged in traditional Japanese oak barrels. The result is a distinctly light and exotically fruity spirit that is unique to Japan.

The 15 year old Japanese Edition

The 15 YO Japanese Mugi Shochu is made from a corn and malted barley recipe. It is initially aged for eleven years in ex-Bourbon casks, followed by a secondary aging in ex-Mugi Shochu Japanese Spirit casks. The secondary maturation lasts four years. The spirit is bottled at 46% without cold filtration to capture its natural identity and full flavor intensity.

Tasting note

Fragrance: Candied apples, lychee and jasmine tea, combined with a layer of soft vanilla sweetness, fruit pastry and spice.

Taste - An explosion of lychee and passion fruit with poached pear, gingerbread cookies and golden syrup.

Finish - Sweet, smooth finish with soft wood tannins, dried fruit and a refreshing fresh finish.
